F1 Announces Cancellation of Bahrain and Saudi Arabian GPs

Formula 1 officially cancels Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grand Prix due to unforeseen regional circumstances

"After careful consideration and consultation with all stakeholders, we have made the difficult decision to cancel these events due to unforeseen regional circumstances. The safety of all personnel, teams, and fans remains our utmost priority." — FIA President

Official Statement from FIA

Formula 1 has officially announced the cancellation of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, scheduled for April 10-12 and April 17-19 respectively. The decision comes amid what the FIA describes as 'unforeseen regional circumstances' that make it impossible to safely proceed with the races.

🏆

Impact on 2026 Championship

The cancellation means the 2026 Formula 1 season will now feature 22 races instead of the scheduled 24. The championship standings will continue as normal, with the next round now being the Miami GP in May.

Teams and drivers will have an extended break before the next race, potentially affecting the momentum of the current championship leaders. George Russell currently leads the drivers' championship with 51 points, followed closely by Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli on 47 points.

💬

Reaction from Teams

Team principals have expressed mixed reactions to the news. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff called it 'disappointing for fans but absolutely the right decision given the circumstances,' while Red Bull's Christian Horner noted that 'the extended break could be a double-edged sword for championship momentum.'

What Happens to the Tickets?

Formula 1 has announced that all ticket holders for both events will receive full refunds. Fans who purchased travel packages will also be compensated. The organization is working with local promoters to reschedule these races for the 2027 season.

📅

Updated Calendar

The next race on the calendar is now the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka on March 27-29, followed by the Miami Grand Prix on May 1-3. F1 has confirmed that no additional races will be added to replace the cancelled events, making the 2026 season a 22-race championship.

The FIA has also confirmed that the sporting regulations regarding the minimum number of races required for a valid championship will still be met, as the season comfortably exceeds the required threshold.
